Trauma Counselling and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Trauma Counselling for PTSD, because the problems often linger on after the event

Trauma can take many forms, and the effects can be both physical and pychological. The physical effects heal quickly, yet the pyshcological problems can linger for many years, or even lie dormant until triggered by a seemingly unrelated event.

At some point in our lives, most of us will experience trauma of some kind, both mild and dramatic. However, there are certain types of trauma that we have difficulty in dealing with. It matters not the severity of the event, just that it creates a lasting impression upon us. For some people, a visual trauma is the worst kind such as a crash, injury or similar premise. For others, a significant emotional event is enough to trigger problems associated with trauma. Simply put, Trauma is the inability to cope with or understand the ideas and emotions involved with being involved in a particular experience, but it matters not what that experience may be.

Symptoms of Trauma

The symptoms you may experencei from TRauma vary from person to person, and also depends on the level and type of trauma they experienced, how quickly it occured, or how they coped with it at the time. If you have any of the following syptoms following a traumatic event, you may be suffering from trauma or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

  • Shock, denial, or disbelief
  • Anger, irritability, mood swings
  • Guilt, shame, self-blame
  • Feeling sad or hopeless

How to deal with Trauma

There are many ways to deal with trauma, but the thing to remember is that you are experiencing NORMAL reactions to ABNORMAL events. You can then build on the fact that you recognise you are suffering , but no longer have to do so, and realise that you are in a position to do something about it. Self help groups can help, as can seeing your doctor and asking advice, but often one on one counselling helps you to restore your natural balance of health and well being.

As an experienced Trauma and PTSD counsellor, we can sit down, together, and work out what happened to cause you these problems, why you are now seemingly a vicitm, and how best to deal with it for the future. Working steadily, we can help restore balance in your life, cope with the negative feelings you may be experiencing, and put together a plan to help get you back to the real you.
