The public perception of OCD generally conjures up images or repetitive hand washing or cleaning, whereas in reality OCD can be much more complicated and deep set than many realise.
OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be a very serious anxiety-related condition that provides its victim with frequent unwanted, unwelcome, or intrusive obsessional thoughts. This is very often followed by repetitive compulsions, impulses or urges to do particular things. OCD can encompass a very broad range of symptoms, but in general is defined as anything which is unwanted, intrusive, obsessional, and persistent or recurring to the point where it can have a significant negative impact of your well being. The thoughts or feelings associated with OCD can be difficult, if not impossible, to ignore. Sufferers tend to believe that the only way to relieve the anxiety is to perform compulsive behaviours, often to prevent perceived harm happening to themselves or, more often than not, to a loved one.
The Obsessive Compulsions (the OC part of OCD) are repetitive physical behaviours and actions or mental thought rituals that are performed over and over again in an attempt to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsessional thoughts.
