Grief and Loss Counselling

Grief can affect different people in different ways. Counselling and Psychotherapy can often help you come to terms with your loss

Grief and Bereavement is often underestimated by friends and family . Those who go through a bereavement of a close friend or family member, can often seen to be coping well in everyday life, yet often struggle when alone with their thoughts. Sadness, Mourning and even Anger are all natural reactions, yet sometimes these can be prolonged and difficult to cope with

Death is an inevitable part of life, and grieving is a natural process for those left behind, but what happens when this grieving process takes over your life? Prolonged and excessive grieving for a loved one is far more common than you may think, yet most of us will only experience it as fleeting moments in the passage of time, fond memories or sadness as the months roll by. Yet, for others, there seems to be no end in sight, and the feelings of loss associated with grief begin to take over your everyday thoughts and actions. The normal cycle of mourning such as denial, fear, feeling lonely, grief, anger and 'letting go' are normal for many of us, but the 'letting go' part can often be difficult for some, especially when the grief is mainly accompanied by loneliness.Others may find themselves getting stuck at other stages of the process, such as anger. The feelings can often turn inwards into despair and depression.

Symptoms of Grief and Loss

  • Pain within the body
  • Confusion, disorientation hallucinations, disbelief
  • Obsession with the deceased, sleeplessness, lack of appetite
  • feelings of loneliness
  • inability to cope

All of these feelings are perfectly normal, and wane with time. However, for a small number of us, it may feel like these feelings are never going to leave. This may be the time to think about counselling, advice, and guidance.

How to cope, and the next steps forward

You may not have considered counselling before, and always thought of yourself as the kind of person who 'just copes' , but for those stricken with grief, counselling and psychotherapy is a wonderful way to help realise the existance and importance of your own well being. This helps to encourage you to move with your life and understand better the feelings of loss you are experiencing, and equips you to cope in the future. no one wants to forget those we have lost, but neither do we want to forget how to live our own life.

Counselling can help...

  • To accept the reality of the loss and understand its significance
  • To work through the confusing pain of grief
  • To adjust to life alone – to re-draw our map of oneself
  • To let go of the person and find a place for them emotionally
